Helping Patients with Diabetes—Improving Injection Comfort and Encouraging Adherence

Pharmacists can play a significant role in helping patients with diabetes achieve their diabetes treatment goals. For a person with diabetes, education is critical. People with diabetes see their pharmacist six times more often than other health care professionals. That means that even pharmacists who are not Certified Diabetes Educators are in the position to help with diabetes education.

It is important to periodically re-assess whether a patient is using the best needle for her needs and using it properly, even if a patient is not voicing complaints about injecting. Your pharmacy patients, including those with dexterity challenges, can experience a more comfortable injection experience through proper needle selection and injection techniques.

At the conclusion of this course, the pharmacist should be able to explain to patients who inject diabetes medications:

• The importance of proper injection technique and proper blood glucose levels
• Why selecting the appropriate needle size and type is important
• The efficacy and safety of using shorter needles
